BYJL Newport – Match Report

What a fantastic opener to the 2024 race calendar for our young comets.

Firstly in the Under 8’s our youngest riders competed in a packed field. Dolly Curtis was brilliant riding against much older riders. Ezmae Laing was super brave and pulled off a fantastic move around the outside in one of her heats. Great to watch.

Olivia Reeman was on fire winning all her qualifying heats to make the A final and finishing off with a 3rd place.

Izacc Laing was another rider on top form only dropping a point to our other rocket Oscar Bartlett in the heats.

Oscar and Izacc had a great tussle in the A-final with Oscar just taking the victory for a Poole 1,2 & 3.

Well done to our Under 10 riders coming away from the first BYJL Regional Round at Newport with 2 wins in their respective finals and a second place!

Congratulations to Max, who has made the step up from Under 8s into Under 10s, where he finished 1st in the B-Final.

Jackson rode to first place in the C-Final after finishing on 12 points.

Iris, showcased her lovely new paint job on her bike, finishing 2nd in the D-Final.

Well done to all 3 riders!

Next onto the Under 12 event which saw our three girls Talulah Curtis, Ava Chapman and Tilly Shear compete. Talulah and Tilly both moving up into this age group for this season.

All 3 were looking great in the heats with Ava scoring 11 & Tilly scoring 13 to progress to the B Final. In a fast final Tilly finished top with Ava coming in 2nd.

Talulah stepped up to the challenge of her new age category by scoring a fantastic 14 points in the heats and qualifying for the A final where she fought hard with the 3 boys narrowly missing out on a podium place coming home in 4th.

Well done Girls.

Onto the under 14 event and we had 2 great riders in this event. Jamie Randall and Teddy Curtis fought hard in the heats where some preferable gates put Teddy at an advantage.

Both lads progressed to the A-Final which was another impressive performance from both of them with Teddy getting the win on the line from Jamie to finish 1 & 2.

Awesome work from both of them.

Moving onto the U15 girls competition and we had Millie Shear in her first year of this category and also the youngest rider in the group.

Millie raced hard and despite crashing whilst trying to overtake a competitor in the heat she jumped straight up and managed to finish the race taking a valuable 2nd place in that heat.

Making it through to the A-final Millie went on to finish 3rd.

Excellent riding Millie.

In the under 18 woman’s group our 3 stars Lexie Curtis, Nataleigh Goulden and Daisy Sherwood all put on a stunning display.

With all three battling hard in the heats to earn A-final spots it was the hard charging Nat Nat Goulden who took the victory with Lexie coming in 4th and  Daisy taking the 3rd spot.

A tremendous match to watch and the girls did not disappoint.

With both Kenzie Bennett and Oliver Saunders moving up to the Under 18 category this season we had no riders in the under 16 event. Oliver was unavailable for this round so it was down to Kenzie to fly the Poole flag in the under 18’s.

He rode a superb set of heats looking fast and smooth throughout the heats.

In the A-Final Kenzie lined up with a trio of Southampton riders and despite making a superb gate an unfortunate slip on the loose surface coming out of the second bend put Kenzie at the back finishing in 4th overall.

A great performance from our very own Junior World Champ and a sign of what’s to come this year.

Well done Kenzie
