South and South Wales League Division 1
Newport vs Poole – 2025 Season Opener
After launching their British Youth and Junior League campaign at home on Saturday, Poole Cycle Speedway Club, now proudly sponsored by local company Fantasy Floors hit the road on Sunday for their first South and South Wales regional League Division 1 fixture of the season, away to Newport.
Poole travelled to South Wales with confidence, fielding a strong side led by Polish star Greg Gluchowski. He was supported by fellow senior Fez Langoo, 3 Veteran riders, Aaron Laing, Phil Gard, and Alan Nation along with 3 juniors Oliver Saunders and two returning homegrown talents, Jamie Randall, back from a stint with Southampton and Nataleigh Goulden rejoining from East Newport.
Newport, however, named a formidable lineup of their own, captained by Lee Galley and featuring reigning European Champion Ben Mould along with Ryan Jones, Harvey Yard, Andy Yard, Callum Goward, Dan Bock, and Sam Marsh.
The match began with a series of drawn heats as both teams found their rhythm. Newport gradually gained the upper hand, pulling off a series of 6-4 and 7-3 heat wins. Poole managed just one 6-4 in the first half, which ended with the home side ahead 48-41.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Newport using their home track advantage and experience to edge further ahead. Despite Poole’s determined efforts to limit the damage and stay within reach, the hosts secured victory by heat 16. Poole rallied in the closing stages but couldn’t bridge the gap and the match concluded with Newport taking the win 92-84.
